ZINC REMOVAL 1.

Flicka Home Page

QUESTION:
Before breaking out the pipe wrench, I was wondering if anyone had any tips for removing the zinc on the aft side of the propeller? From looking at the replacement, seems it should come right off after removing the rear screw.
Any hints would be appreciated.

REPLY:
Yes, just remove the one screw on the aft end of the zinc. You may have to tap the zinc from side to side to break it loose but don't hit it hard enough to bend the prop, prop nut or shaft. When you install the new zinc try to use a stainless steel. internal wrenching (Allen) screw. It's a lot more secure. Be sure to use anti-seize compound on the screw threads before you install it.

COMMENT:
After losing two zinc's I started using Loctite. In my experience, the problem is not taking the zinc off, but keeping it on. Using an allen screw sounds like a good idea. I'll try that this year.

REPLY:
Good suggestion about Loctite. I use a stainless steel washer with a stainless steel. lock washer on my boat. If you use Loctite try the kind that can be easily removed (in my opinion). I believe the part number is 222, or if not available, 242.
