QUESTION Anybody come up with any interesting uses for the enclose built in water tank area in the quarter berth area. I have a flex water tank forward so have enough potable water capacity. If I ever get the sealed hatch off the water tank, I'm wondering if there is a use for this area other than water. Is this a safe place for additional fuel tank? I have an outboard. Has anybody turned it into a storage space? Any suggestions or ideas are welcomed. Thanks
REPLY #1 Well, the obvious solution is to fill that sucker full of the drink of your choice! I say rum. In fact, I once saw a deck fill plate with the word "RUM" cast into it instead of "WATER".
(NOTE: Perhaps in the days of Drake, but the alcohol may leach other chemicals from the fiberglass - sorry - Rod Bruckdorfer
On a more serious note, I would advise strongly against putting gasoline in that tank. If it ever leaked, the smell and the potential for explosion is not worth the benefits. I would say use the area as storage and when you go off on a long trip and need more water storage you'll have the tank ready to go. When you see the cost of a watermaker you'll wish you had all sorts of room for water storage! By the way, I think having the water stored up in the bow is a good idea because it tends to bring the stern up - well, until you've used all the water! Onward... Jack Harding, s/v Rapport
REPY #2 We never had the built in galley installed at the factory. We installed equipment to our own desires, including a flexible tank under the V-berth in the non-finished area. As a result, we had the water tank available for storage. It is almost completely divided by a baffle to help keep the water from sloshing so much. So, it is basically two storage bins under one lid. It is medium sized, and we find it very handy. We generally let our son (who sleeps in the quarter berth) use if for his personal gear. Occasionally we will put some dry foodstuffs in there.
If you are completely satisfied with your tankage forward, which really helps balance the boat, and is much larger capacity in our case than the built in tank would be, go ahead and rip that top off.
The only inconvenience is that the quarter berth cushion is large and a bit unwieldy to get out of the way of the locker when lifting the lid. I am thinking of having the cushion cut into two for this reason. Fair Winds, Morris London
